AUSTIN – Here’s what the Texas Transportation Commission discussed and approved at its May meeting.
Preparing Texas for the 2026 World Cup
The commission received a statewide update on preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which will include matches in Arlington and Houston and is expected to draw millions of visitors.
TxDOT is coordinating with local partners to enhance corridors, improve signage, expand traffic monitoring and deploy additional communication tools to keep travelers informed.
Efforts include:
- Upgrading roadside infrastructure and signage
- Expanding traffic monitoring and incident response systems
- Deploying dynamic message signs and targeted safety alerts
- Enhancing coordination with regional and national partners
Local preparation includes corridor cleaning, landscaping and operational planning to manage traffic before, during and after matches.
Recognition of service
The commission recognized two employees for their decades of leadership and service to the people of Texas as they’re set to retire from the agency.
- Kenneth Wood served more than 28 years and retires as director of procurement.
- James Stevenson served for more than 27 years with the department and retires as director of maintenance.
Executive Director comments
Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Executive Director Marc Williams emphasized safety as the agency’s top priority, particularly heading into the busy summer travel season. The Safe Days of Summer initiative reinforces safe practices for employees, contractors and the traveling public during peak travel months.
Strategic planning and funding discussions
The commission approved TxDOT’s 2027–2031 Strategic Plan, outlining the agency’s long-term goals focused on safety, delivery, innovation and stewardship.
Additionally, the commission discussed early development of the agency’s upcoming legislative appropriations request, including capital investment priorities and workforce planning needs for future funding.
Contracts
The commissioners awarded low-bid value amounts of $704 million for 71 highway improvement projects and $35 million for 20 routine maintenance contracts.
Projects include investments in congestion reduction, pavement preservation, safety improvements and enhanced connectivity. An additional 20 routine maintenance contracts were also approved.
Supporting transportation systems statewide
Commissioners approved funding for a range of transportation programs, including:
- Aviation grants supporting 12 capital improvement projects
- Public transportation funding to assist rural and urban transit systems
- Continued support for intercity bus service connections in West Texas
