SL 287 improvement project set to begin Sept. 2

Project aims to relieve congestion between Copeland and U.S. 59

LUFKIN, Texas – A widening project aimed at improving road conditions SL 287 between U.S. 59 and Copeland Street will get underway in early September.

When completed, dedicated lanes will be connected to the ramps of BUS 59, Southwood Drive and College Drive, giving drivers additional time and space to both merge onto and exit the loop.

Longview-based contractor Longview Bridge and Road is set to place traffic barricades to direct traffic through the work zone east of where SL 287 crosses above the Union Pacific Railroad line and FM 324/Southwood Drive on Wednesday, Sept. 3.

During the first phase of the work, the existing road between BUS 59 and the railroad will be milled and widened. The entrance and exit ramps at BUS 59 will be widened, along with the east-bound ramp at FM 324/Southwood Drive.

The second phase of the project will mill and widen the roadway between FM 324/Southwood Drive and Copeland Street, and the exit ramps west of the railroad at FM 324/Southwood Drive.

Work on this project is expected to be completed in spring 2027.

Updates on the project and its progress are available to the public through TxDOT’s Project Tracker.
