Lufkin-area drivers may be frustrated by what seems like a lack of progress on some Texas Department of Transportation projects in the city but should rest assured work continues to upgrade and improve the safety of state roadways.
Weather, material availability, contractor schedules, and the holiday season all impact what work can be performed on construction and improvement projects.
Along SH 94/Frank Street, temporary transitions at Raguet Street were installed in November 2025 when a combination of the availability of materials and cooling temperatures made for unsuitable nighttime paving conditions.
The work on SL 287 has also been affected, and contractors have pivoted to working on building infrastructure to support the new lanes. Concrete railing foundations are being drilled and will be poured, along with a new concrete traffic barrier being placed to provide protection between east and westbound traffic. Non-mow strips – areas of grass and vegetation that prevent erosion and protect the road’s structure – are being established.
