Business 59 mill, inlay project begins March 4

Lufkin – Night work to mill and inlay the length of US 59 Business (BU 59) in Lufkin will begin next week.

Between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m., workers will repave 4.6 miles of BU 59 between the north and south intersections with State Loop 287 (SL 287). Portions of South Chestnut Street, Spur 287 and South First Street are included in the project, which is expected to take 17 months, weather permitting.

The project will be divided into four phases. Phase One will start at the north end of BU 59/Timberland and end at the BU 69/Kurth Drive intersection. When that section is complete, crews will continue moving south in phases until reaching the south BU 59/SL 287 intersection.

Cedar Park, Texas-based contractor Texas Materials Group will perform the work.

Drivers should expect delays during night hours when workers are present. Pedestrians should use extra caution if approaching the active work zone and seek alternate routes where possible. If traveling near an active work zone, pedestrians should take steps to be as visible as possible, like carrying a light or wearing bright-colored or reflective clothing.

Traffic signals along BU 59 are not expected to be impacted by the work. Drivers should use caution, slow down when approaching work zones, and watch for workers and equipment.
