Loop 88 construction continues as work on Phase 3C begins

LUBBOCK – Next week, TxDOT is scheduled to continue work to transform FM 1585 into Lubbock’s second major state loop, Loop 88. Williams Brothers Construction Co, Inc., of Houston, Tx, is scheduled to begin construction along the Phase 3C Loop 88 project limits on Wednesday, September 9.

Phase 3C project limits are from Avenue U to half a mile east of I-27/US 87 and between 114th and 146 Streets along the I-27/US 87 corridor. Project cost for Phase 3C is $221.6 million.

“3C will continue work on plans to redesign FM 1585 from a rural, two-lane roadway into Loop 88, a six-lane freeway with frontage roads, bridges and ramps,” said Joe Villalobos, P.E., TxDOT Lubbock Area Engineer. “Phase 3A and B were completed this past spring and we’re excited to continue work to not only improve mobility in this fast growing area of Lubbock but also improving safety along the corridor.”

Crews are scheduled to begin work by constructing the east- and westbound Loop 88 frontage roads.

“Traffic will continue to be one-lane in each direction as work to construct the frontage roads begins. As construction ramps up, plans include reduced speed limits in the project limits on both FM 1585 and I-27/US 87. Drivers can also expect traffic changes along the interstate when work to rebuild the I-27, Loop 88 interchange begins,” Villalobos said.

Drivers are urged to stay alert and watch out for slow moving construction equipment, follow the posted speed limit, should expect delays, and are encouraged to seek alternate routes around the work zone.

Construction on Phase 3C is the third of seven phases (incorporated into five projects) to build a freeway facility, along Segment 3 of the Loop 88 corridor. Segment 3 spans from US 87 to US 62/82 in Wolfforth.

Construction on Phase 3C is expected to be completed in fall 2031.
