Digital design system

Welcome to the Digital Design System, essential resources for TxDOT digital products. These resources streamline design and development efforts and support consistent user-centered experiences. The Digital Design System uses a scalable two-tier approach which consists of the foundation library and digital product libraries.

Digital Design System resources are exclusively for TxDOT digital products and cannot be used for print or graphic design materials.

Digital Design System two-tier architecture showing a shared Foundation Library that provides foundational design elements to multiple product libraries through a semantic layer.
  • Primitive Layer (Foundations): The foundation library provides the core design tokens and shared components that power all TxDOT digital products. Product libraries inherit from these foundations unless product-specific requirements necessitate customization.

  • Semantic Layer (Alias): Product libraries may include semantic tokens that provide meaningful, context-based naming while remaining flexible across components and experiences. These tokens reference values from the Primitive Layer and are defined specifically for each product library.

The Digital Design System is the foundation library plus digital product libraries.

The foundation library contains basic components, patterns, and design assets that all TxDOT digital product should include.

The digital product library is a child of the foundation library containing components, patterns, and design assets that support a unique needs for a specific digital product.
