I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX)

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is delivering the I-35 NEX Program, a $3.5 billion investment in one of the region's most heavily traveled transportation corridors. Spanning approximately 20 miles from N. Walters Street in San Antonio to FM 1103 in Schertz, the program is designed to improve mobility, enhance safety, and support continued growth throughout the region.

The NEX Program consists of multiple projects across Bexar, Comal, and Guadalupe counties that are being delivered in phases. Together, these improvements will help move people and goods more efficiently while enhancing connectivity along the I-35 corridor.

I-35 is a critical transportation corridor for the San Antonio region and is expected to see significant growth in traffic over the coming decades. The corridor currently carries approximately 231,300 vehicles per day, with traffic volumes projected to increase to 393,200 vehicles per day in the next twenty years.

The I-35 NEX Program is designed to:

• Improve safety and mobility throughout the corridor.
• Reduce future travel times by as much as 30 minutes.
• Address growing traffic demand and improve travel reliability.
• Increase capacity to support the region's continued growth.
• Enhance connectivity for commuters, freight, and local traffic.
• Maintain and modernize critical transportation infrastructure.

The I-35 NEX Program includes a variety of improvements designed to increase roadway capacity, improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and support future growth along the corridor. It will also provide a seamless transition to the Loop 1604 North Expansion efforts once the projects are completed.

New elevated structures will be constructed within the I-35 corridor to carry:

• Two general purpose lanes in each direction
• One HOV lane in each direction
• Direct connections at key interchanges of the corridor

These new lanes will help improve travel reliability and provide additional capacity while maximizing use of the existing corridor.

The program includes improvements to interchanges and roadway connections throughout the corridor, including:

• New and reconstructed entrance and exit ramps
• Improved system connections through flyover ramps
• Renovated roadway configurations
• Enhanced access for local and regional traffic

These improvements are intended to improve traffic operations and reduce congestion.
