I-35 NEX South: Phase 1

Project overview

TxDOT awarded the Design-Build contract for the I-35 NEX South Phase 1 Project to Lone Star Contractors, NEX, LP, a Fluor Enterprises, Inc. and Austin Bridge and Road, LP joint venture company.  The project consists of the design, construction, and maintenance of 4.2 miles of non-tolled improvements along I-35 and runs through northeast San Antonio and adjacent to Windcrest in Bexar County.

  • Project limits: I-35 from I-410 South to I-410 North
  • Design-Build cost: $700M
  • Contractor: Lone Star Contractors, NEX
  • Construction start date:  summer 2024
  • Estimated completion date: 2028

The project consists of three elevated lanes, including two mainlanes and one high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane in each direction. The I-35 elevated lanes will provide a direct connection to I-410 South at the I-35/I-410 South interchange.
