Convict Hill cross-street bridge opens

  • As early as the night of Wednesday, April 22, the Convict Hill Road cross-street bridge will open, restoring cross-street access at Convict Hill Road and US 290.
  • Drivers can make a left turn from westbound US 290 to southbound Convict Hill Road, and a left turn from eastbound US 290 to northbound Convict Hill Road.
  • Non-signalized U-turns in both directions of US 290 will be available on the new bridge.

Westbound US 290 mainlanes open between Patton Ranch Road and RM 1826

  • The westbound US 290 mainlanes between Patton Ranch Road and just west of RM 1826 opened to traffic on Thursday, April 16.
  • Drivers heading westbound on US 290 coming from downtown Austin will have the option to stay on the mainlanes and use the new bridge over the William Cannon Drive intersection.
  • For access to William Cannon Drive, SH 71, Convict Hill Road, or RM 1826, drivers will exit prior to Patton Ranch Road to the westbound US 290 frontage road in this configuration.

Eastbound US 290 mainlanes William Cannon bypass opens

  • As early as Thursday, March 19, an additional portion of the eastbound US 290 mainlanes will open east of the 'Y'.
  • Drivers traveling towards downtown Austin will still enter the mainlanes just west of RM 1826.
  • RM 1826, Convict Hill Road, and SH 71 will stay on the eastbound US 290 frontage road, as there will not be exits from the mainlanes for these cross-streets in this configuration.
  • For those using the new eastbound US 290 mainlanes, the option to exit onto the frontage road at William Cannon Drive will remain.

Convict Hill U-turns open

  • As early as Tuesday, March 24, new Convict Hill U-turns over US 290 will open, connecting the eastbound and westbound US 290 frontage road.
  • The full Convict Hill Road bridge will open at a later date.

Oak Hill Plaza/Center of the Hills crossing closure

  • In January 2026, cross-street access between Oak Hill Plaza and Center of the Hills shopping centers at SH 71 temporarily closed, allowing crews to complete the bypass bridges over the intersection.
  • The intersections are right in/right out only. Traffic signals will facilitate through traffic and right-turn movements.
  • Westbound SH 71 traffic can make a non-signalized U-turn at Scenic Brook Drive to reach eastbound SH 71 and Oak Hill Plaza. Eastbound SH 71 traffic can make a non-signalized U-turn near Tesla to reach westbound SH 71 and Center of the Hills.

New configuration at 'Y' Interchange and William Cannon bypass bridge closed

  • As early as October 2025, the US 290/SH 71 Interchange will open to its new Single Point Urban Interchange configuration. (Check out the animation video below).
  • New bridges at the intersection will provide access for left-turn and U-turn movements for eastbound US 290, and continued access from eastbound SH 71 to eastbound US 290. The eastern bridge will also allow the drivers to make a west-to-east U-turn at the US 290/SH71 Interchange.
  • This configuration is expected to be in place until project completion in 2026.
  • All major activity is subject to change and weather permitting.

Convict Hill Road cross-street closure at US 290

  • In early July, cross-street access closed at Convict Hill Road, which is now a right-in/right-out only to the new eastbound US 290 frontage road.
  • Westbound US 290 drivers accessing Convict Hill Road will U-turn at RM 1826. Convict Hill drivers accessing westbound US 290 will U-turn at William Cannon Drive.
