Segment overview

Reconstruct and widen the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard bridge to improve connectivity and safety. In addition, the project will add sidewalks, shade structures and safety barrier along the bridge and reconstruct I-35 entrance and exit ramps in both directions.

Major impacts/activity

  • Northbound I-35 15th Street entrance ramp permanently closed.
  • Southbound I-35 upper deck exit to MLK permanently closed. Use lower deck.
  • During reconstruction of the south side of the bridge, access will be maintained with two eastbound lanes, two westbound lanes and a pedestrian sidewalk through late 2026. Full closures will be minimal and occur at night.
MLK Bridge Reconstruction Traffic Shift (to North Phase). Moderately complex traffic schematic map of the lane configuration and traffic shifts during the north phase of construction on the MLK Bridge as part of the I-35 Capital Express Central project. The map shows the MLK Boulevard bridge over I-35 near the University of Texas at Austin, including nearby landmarks such as UFCU Disch-Falk Field and the Moody Center. The legend includes eastbound traffic, westbound traffic, pedestrian access, and areas closed to traffic and pedestrians within the work zone. The map conveys that four lanes of traffic are maintained across the northern side of bridge, with traffic shifted to accommodate construction, while pedestrian access is preserved but rerouted around closures.
