I-35 Capital Express South Project

Project overview

The project will add two high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) managed lanes in each direction along I-35 between SH 71/Ben White Boulevard and SH 45 Southeast. In addition, the project will include a southbound I-35 bypass lane that will allow traffic to bypass Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive. Entrance and exit ramps will also be reconstructed and relocated. Pedestrian and bicycle paths will also be added.

Major impacts/activity

Beginning Friday, Nov. 14, the southbound I-35 mainlanes in South Austin will be closed nightly to allow construction crews to work on the elevated managed lanes. To perform work safely and efficiently, crews will close the southbound I-35 mainlanes from SH 71/Ben White Boulevard to Stassney Lane for two nights, weather permitting. Detours will be in place (see detour map).

The closures will occur nightly:

  • Friday, Nov. 14 from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 15 from 11 p.m. to 10 a.m.

Note: Both access ramps from eastbound and westbound SH 71/Ben White Boulevard to southbound I-35 will be closed during this operation.

From eastbound SH 71/Ben White Boulevard: Drivers will take the Congress Avenue exit ramp, continue to the I-35 frontage road and turn right.
From westbound SH 71/Ben White Boulevard: Drivers will take the northbound I-35 exit, then exit to Oltorf Street and use the U-turn to access southbound I-35.
