Frequently asked questions
What are the goals of the I-35E Phase 2 Project?
- A comprehensive review and planning study of the I-35E corridor in Dallas and Denton counties began in 1998 and would last through 2011. During this time, the area experienced increased traffic due to the state’s overall population growth, creating travel demands beyond the capacity at the time.
- The I-35E Phase 2 Project will improve the safety of travelers along I-35E by increasing capacity to meet local and regional travel demands. This will include upgrading the transportation infrastructure to meet current Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) design standards for interstates, bridges, and frontage roads.
Who is the project team involved in building the I-35E Project?
- This project is being completed through partnered efforts between TxDOT, owner and manager, and Lone Star Constructors, the design-build contractor. Lone Star Constructors is a joint venture between Fluor Heavy Civil, LLC (Fluor) and Austin Bridge & Road, LP (Austin).
When will construction begin and when will it end?
- Construction will begin Spring 2022 and last through Winter 2025.
How much will it cost to build the project?
- Estimated total construction cost: $709 million.
What was Phase 1 of the project?
- Phase 1 began in 2013 and was completed in 2018. It was known as the I-35E Managed Lanes Project. The project added two-lane reversible tolled managed lanes to the entire 28-mile corridor and additional general purpose lane capacity in Denton County. It also included main lane, frontage road, and interchange improvements.
