Construction on the Big 6 project began on Dec. 1, 2025.
Current activity
Week of December 15:
Lane closures
Drivers can expect the following overnight single lane closures on SH 6 this week:
- Monday, Dec. 15: Northbound main lane from Rock Prairie to FM 2818
- Tuesday, Dec. 16: Northbound main lane from Rock Prairie to FM 2818
- Tuesday, Dec. 16: Northbound main lane from University to Briarcrest
- Wednesday, Dec. 17: Northbound main lane closure between the entrance ramp north of FM 2818 and exit ramp for SH 30. There will be a limited period of time that the SH 30 exit ramp will be closed to install a barrier. Ramp impact should be limited to the end of the closure window.
- Thursday, Dec. 18: Northbound frontage road to install barrier along both sides of the Southwest Parkway/Raintree Drive intersection.
All overnight closures will be from 7:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.
Speed Limit Reduction
On Tuesday, Dec. 16, TxDOT's contractor will be installing 45 MPH speed limit signs on both the northbound and southbound frontage roads between Barron Road and Texas Avenue (FM 2818). We ask that driver's please be alert and watch for the new speed limit changes.
Lead and asbestos abatement
- Starting this week, the abatement subcontractor will begin work. Crews will be in full hazmat gear, which may look unusual to drivers; this is a standard safety measure. Work will continue through the next few months.
Abatement schedule
- Dec. 1-8: Work near Burton Creek
- Starting Dec. 8: Begin at FM 158, moving south to complete all abatement that does not require lane closures through the end of December
- Early January: Resume at FM 158 moving south to finish abatement that requires lane closures
Looking ahead
Here's what can be expected in the next six months:
- Two main lanes in each direction will be maintained throughout construction
- Majority of the work will be on the main lanes
- Construction of temporary pavement and retaining walls
