Project updates: January 2024

By Danny Perez

We are getting close! 2023 was a busy year for the I-610 West Loop/ I-69 Southwest Freeway interchange project. Traffic on the I-610 West Loop was placed on the new I-610 mainlane bridges (northbound and southbound) and the I-610 southbound entrance ramp from Westheimer near the Houston Galleria opened significantly earlier than anticipated.

Currently, crews are working on completing construction on both I-610 West Loop medians bridges over I-69 while advancing the remaining detention ponds and retaining walls. Crews will then move to demolish and reconstruct the I-610 West Loop northbound connector ramp to I-69 Southwest Freeway northbound. This will require the total closure of this ramp for a few months.

Work is nearing the completion of the I-69 northbound connector ramp to I-610 northbound to open up the ramp to two lanes.  Also, crews have nearly completed work on an adjacent detention pond that will widen the roadway to open up the I-610 southbound connector ramp to I-69 southbound to two lanes. To finish out the project by later this year, crews will place overhead and small signs, complete a pump station, place pavement for the I-610 northbound frontage road at Westpark and final striping and vegetation at the interchange.

We continue to make great progress with the I-610 West Loop/ I-69 Southwest Freeway interchange project and plan to have the project completed by late 2024. Each day we work with the contractor to take every opportunity to accelerate work where we can. The goal is to complete this project as quickly as possible while also minimizing impacts to the traveling public.
