Traffic switch happening December 4 for the I-10 White Oak Bayou elevation project, motorists should expect delays

As a part of ongoing construction, TxDOT crews will conduct a traffic switch with multiple closures taking place, advancing through phase I of the I-10 White Oak Bayou Elevation project beginning Thursday, December 4 that will reduce the I-10 westbound mainlanes between I-45 North Freeway and Houston Ave to two lanes of traffic which will remain closed until an estimated mid-2026.

This closure is necessary to complete the construction of the new elevated westbound mainlanes, which will overlap the footprint of the existing westbound mainlanes.

The closures are as follows:

Total closure of the I-10 westbound mainlanes from I-45 Gulf/ Hogan St to Taylor St beginning 10:00 PM, Friday, December 5 to 5:00 A.M., Monday, December 8. This closure will reduce the mainlanes from three to two lanes of traffic until mid-2026.

Motorists traveling on I-45 northbound intending to access I-10 westbound mainlanes will continue I-45 north and use the connector ramp to I-610 westbound and continue on I-610, then use the ramp to I-10 to access either I-10 eastbound or westbound.

Total closure of the I-10 eastbound connector ramp to I-45 northbound beginning 10:00 P.M., Thursday, December 4 estimated to last through project completion in mid-2028. This direct connector weaves over the existing westbound mainlanes, under the existing HOV, and will be rebuilt similarly through the proposed bridges. The construction will be completed in phases throughout the entirety of the project.

Motorists traveling, I-10 eastbound intending to access I-45 North will use the connector ramp to I-610 West Loop northbound, continue along I-610, and then use the connector ramp to I-45 to access either I-45 northbound or southbound.

Total closure of the I-45 southbound connector ramp to I-10 Katy westbound, including the HOV lane, beginning 10:00 P.M., Thursday, December 4 estimated to re-open mid-2026. This connector will be fully closed to allow for its removal and reinstallation at the new elevated height.

  • Motorists traveling, I-45 South intending to access the I-10 westbound mainlanes will continue onto I-45 and use the connector ramp to I-10 eastbound, exit at McKee/Hardy Street. Make a left turn onto Hardy Street, followed by a left turn onto Providence Street and use the entrance ramp from Providence St to access I-10 westbound mainlanes.

Total closure of the I-10 westbound entrance ramp from Louisiana ave., beginning 10:00 P.M., Friday, December 5 to 5:00 A.M., Monday, December 8.

  • Motorists traveling Louisiana Street intending to access the I-10 Westbound main lanes perform a right turn at Franklin St and perform a left turn at Travis St to merge onto I-45 northbound and follow the detour to access I-10 westbound mainlanes.

Total closure of the I-10 Katy Freeway westbound Connector Ramp To IH-45 Gulf/ Hogan St southbound, beginning 10:00 P.M., Friday, December 5 to 5:00 A.M., Monday, December 8.

  • Motorists traveling I-10 westbound traffic needing to access I-45 Gulf Freeway will exit I-45 northbound, take the connector ramp to I-610 westbound. Continue on I-610 westbound, use the connector ramp to I-10 eastbound and follow the mainlanes to access I-45 Gulf Freeway southbound mainlanes.

Total closure of the I-45 North Freeway Northbound connector ramp to I-10 Katy beginning 10:00 P.M., Friday, December 5 to 5:00 A.M., Monday, December 8.

  • Motorists traveling, I-45 northbound traffic needing to access I-10 westbound mainlanes must continue along I-45 North and use the connector ramp to I-610 West and continue to I-610, use the connector ramp to I-10 to access either I-10 eastbound or westbound.

Total closure of the I-45 North Freeway Southbound entrance ramp from N.Main St beginning 10:00 P.M., Friday, December 5 to 5:00 A.M., Monday, December 8.

  • Motorists traveling N. Mian St, needing to access IH45 North Freeway Southbound, should continue along N. Main Street, turn left onto the North Freeway Service Road, proceed northbound, make a U-turn at Patton Street, and use the next available entrance ramp to enter the IH-45 North Freeway southbound mainlanes.

This $400 million project will raise the elevation of the I-10 mainlanes above the floodplain of White Oak Bayou from Heights Boulevard to I-45 including the reconstruction of the I-10 HOV lanes, and reconstruction of the Houston Avenue Bridge.

While we will continue to make outstanding progress as this project continues, during construction, drivers are advised to follow posted detour signs and remain vigilant of changing traffic patterns. Patience and caution will be essential to ensure safety as construction advances.
