Drive like a Texan: Protecting what we love

The Texan way of life is built on pride, friendliness, and looking out for one another, both on the road and in our daily lives. That spirit drives Dr. Donna Shaver, a conservationist who has spent decades protecting Padre Island National Seashore and the wildlife that depends on it.

Dr. Shaver has dedicated her life’s work to saving sea turtles and their nests along 80 miles of Texas coastline. Every nest she protects impacts the survival of a species that has been here for millions of years. Protecting them means ensuring their safe passage home.

Protecting what and who we love makes a difference on the road, too. Just like sea turtles rely on us to slow down and pay attention, staying patient behind the wheel, giving others space, and staying alert keeps our loved ones safe.

I want people to drive safely and pay attention. The earth and its creatures depend on it.

— Dr. Donna Shaver

Each of us plays a role and can make an impact. When we drive with kindness, courtesy, and safe habits, we make roads safer. Let’s look out for one another and ensure that future generations can enjoy the Texas we all love so much.
