The cross section of a ramp or direct connector is a function of the following variables:
- Number of lanes determined by traffic volume;
- Minimum lane and shoulder width, see ;
- Lane balance; and
- Where traffic volumes require two lanes merging onto a freeway, adequate weaving distance must be provided.
