The TxDOT El Paso District is developing a Corridor Plan for a 15-mile section of Doniphan Drive (State Highway 20) between the Texas/New Mexico state line and Racetrack Drive in El Paso.
Create a corridor plan that will document the community’s future vision in regard to transportation and development for Doniphan Drive beginning in 2016 through 2040. One of the results of this process will be the identification of a set of projects for short-, medium- and long-term implementation. The development of this plan will be accomplished through a process including data collection, public outreach, analysis of current and future transportation needs, and identification of potential projects.
Based on the input received from the City of El Paso at Public Meeting No. 1 in September 2016, TxDOT has decided to extend the study limits for the Doniphan Drive Corridor Plan approximately 3.5 miles south. The new study limits include a 15-mile section of Doniphan Drive (State Highway 20) between the Texas/New Mexico state line and Racetrack Drive in El Paso. The previous southern limit was Mesa Street.
Public engagement is a key element to the success of this Corridor Plan. The development of this plan will be accomplished over the next year through a process including coordination with the public, stakeholders, elected/public officials, cities, counties and agencies. As the planning process proceeds, we will request public input at key coordination points throughout the development of Doniphan Drive Corridor Plan.
These coordination points include:
Our interactive tool provides a way to visualize and compare traffic conditions on Doniphan Drive at different times of day, both existing conditions (2016) and how conditions may change in the future if no improvements are made by 2040.
What We Are Working On and What's Next
The first public meeting was held on Sept. 29, 2016. This meeting focused on introducing the study and gathering feedback on known needs and challenges along the corridor, possible solutions and draft criteria that can be used to evaluate the possible solutions. A summary of the materials presented and comments received at the meeting are available here.
Series #2 of the public meetings were held on Sept. 26 and Sept. 27, 2017. These meetings focused on presenting and gathering input on three design alternatives of roadway, multi-modal, drainage, and urban design improvements that address the needs and challenges in the corridor. Meeting display boards and video, schematics (Alternative A, B and C) and meeting handouts are available in the downloads section below.
