13.4 Alignment and Profile

The alignment and grade of intersecting roadways should permit all users (i.e., motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, etc.) to easily recognize the intersection and perform maneuvers needed to pass through the intersection with minimum interference.
The alignment should be as straight and the profile as flat as practical.

13.4.1 Horizontal Alignment

Intersections should meet at, or nearly at, right angles unless roundabouts are used. When realigning roads at intersections, the greatest benefit is obtained when the curves used to realign the roads allow operating speeds nearly equivalent to the major-roadway approach speeds.
The practice of constructing short-radius horizontal curves on side-road approaches to achieve right-angle intersections should be avoided whenever practical.
Refer to for more information on realigning roadways at intersections.
