1.3 Schematic Development

1.3.1 Schematic Development Process

Refer to for a comprehensive discussion of the schematic development process

1.3.2 Types of Schematics

The types of schematics that are discussed in detail in the PDP include:
  • Geometric Schematic
    – a geometric schematic that goes through a formal design, review and approval process is required for projects that are a:
    • New location project;
    • Added capacity project (including frontage roads);
    • Reconstruction with added ROW;
    • Interstate ramp relocation project;
    • Environmental Impact Statement project; or
    • Other projects that would require an IAJR.
    For high profile and politically sensitive projects, a geometric schematic is also recommended but not required.
    Refer to for more information about the Geometric Schematic
  • Geometric Layout
    – for projects that do not require the formal geometric schematic design, review, and approval process. This is a more simplified layout to convey project information and is used to gain feedback from project stakeholders. Refer to for more information.

1.3.3 Geometric Schematic Approval Process

Refer to for details concerning the submission, review and approval of schematics.
