I-35 Northeast San Antonio Project

I-35 serves as a major gateway in the San Antonio area. As San Antonio continues to grow, congestion along I-35 also increases. To address this congestion, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is proposing improvements to I-35 northeast of downtown. The proposed improvements will also address safety and improve this section of I-35 to better meet growing demands from additional motorists.

TxDOT completed a preliminary study, called a Planning and Environmental Linkage (PEL) study in 2013. This study examined potential improvements along I-35 from near downtown San Antonio to FM 1103 in Schertz. To build on this study, TxDOT initiated a detailed environmental study to add lanes on I-35. The proposed improvements to I-35 from the I-35/I-410 South interchange to FM 1103 include:

  • Adding managed lanes generally within existing right of way
  • Improving interchanges at Loop 1604, I-410 North, and I-410 South to better accommodate added lanes

A public hearing was held on the proposed project in February 2015. A Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) was issued in July 2015.
