Travel Information Division Director

Joan Henderson serves as director of Travel Information.

She was named director in March 2016. She previously held the position of Texas Highways publisher. Henderson came to Texas Highways in 2014 from Oklahoma Today magazine, where she served as publisher and division director for nearly twenty years. While there, Henderson spearheaded the production and two updates of The Official Record of the Oklahoma City Bombing.

Henderson is a past president of the International Regional Magazine Association (IRMA) and currently serves on its president’s council. She served for ten years on the board of directors of the Magazine Publishers of America Independent Magazine Advisory Group (MPA-IMAG) and is a past vice-president of the Oklahoma Pro chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Henderson worked as an account executive for Tocquigny Design in Austin in the early 1990s and led an award-winning multi-image photography team in Boston, Massachusetts, in the 1980s.

Born in New York and raised in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Henderson graduated from Oklahoma State University with a BA in humanities. An accomplished photographer, her hand-tinted black and white images have been featured in numerous periodicals and photographic exhibitions in Oklahoma, Texas, and Massachusetts.

Henderson was inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame in 2011.
