RM 1376 from Wasp Creek Rd. to US 87 BUS Construction Project

General

In November 2019, TxDOT initiated the construction of improvements to enhance safety and upgrade RM 1376 an important north/south roadway for the City of Boerne and Kendall County. The RM 1376 project rehabilitates and widens 8.073 miles of existing roadway, beginning 0.5 miles north of Wasp Creek Road and ending at US 87 Business in Boerne. The existing roadway, which consists of two 10-foot lanes with no shoulders, will be widened to create two 11-foot lanes with 4-foot shoulders. Furthermore, several intersections will benefit from the addition of center left turn lanes at Walnut Way, Walnut Grove Road, Bent Tree Drive, and Summit Trail. Of the 31 culverts existing within the project limits, 29 will be lengthened to accommodate the wider pavement.

The addition of shoulders, left turn lanes, and wider lanes will enhance safety and provide a smooth, durable driving surface for RM 1376 commuters.

Project phasing

The project will be constructed in three main phases and is expected to be complete in May 2021* as described below:

  • Phase 1 – this includes the lengthening of the 29 culverts. Due to the narrow existing pavement, many of these culverts will have to be built in two steps. Traffic will be shifted to one side of the road at a time, and temporary traffic signals will be used to control traffic. When the first side of the culvert is complete, traffic will be shifted to the other side. Some of the culverts are small enough that they can be built under daily lane closures, without needing the temporary traffic signals. This phase was completed in July 2020.
  • Phase 2 – this includes rehabilitating and widening the pavement. This work will be done in segments under daily lane closures, and the road will be opened to traffic at the end of each workday. The existing roadway will be removed, the subgrade will be stabilized with lime, and the new pavement will be constructed with 8 inches of flexible base. The base will receive a 1-course surface treatment, hot mix asphalt and then opened to traffic. This phase is underway, with expected completion of December 2020.
  • Phase 3 – In effort to speed up the construction process, phase 2 and 3 have been combined in most areas in which this includes placing the final pavement on the roadway, adding striping and signs. This phase is expected to be complete in May 2021.

* All estimated completion time frames are weather-dependent and are subject to change.

Traffic updates

During construction, drivers on RM 1376 may experience some delay due to temporary closures of the roadway. Most closures will take place during off-peak hours, typically Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. while schools are in session, or between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. when schools are closed. Work will not take place during major holidays.
