Guidelines on Projects with Underpasses
- Vertical clearance shown (typically16-foot 6 inch minimum and 18-foot 6 inch on major freight corridors).
- Warning signs included for vertical clearance if less than 20 feet.
- Details for shoofly bridges included (if shoofly bridge is used during construction).
- Location and details of shoring included.
- Details ofresponsible party performing thework (contractor or railroad company),responsible partyproviding materials and any absolute work windows shown.
- Bridge columns protected from vehicular traffic with proper barriers and object markers.
- Details of any adjacent at-grade crossings impacted by construction shown.
- For any demolition,such as removing a pier in railroad right of way, specify thedistance below ground of the structural element that must be removed. (UPRR andCPKCprefer 3 feet below finished grade and 2 feet below base of rail, whichever is lower; BNSF prefers 3 feet below finished grade and 3 feet below base of rail, whichever is lower).
- Anti-graffiti fence shown (if required by railroad company).
- Storm sewer and pump station design shown.
