Section 7: Traffic Management Center Data

There are datasets available through TxDOT’s Traffic Management Centers that use detectors. These detectors are typically set up in metro/urban Districts like AUS, DAL, FTW, ELP and SAT Districts. These datasets can be used as a resource for project traffic operations and safety analysis needs.
The detectors listed in the spreadsheet are from the TxDOT Lonestar ITS implementation. Most of the detectors are radar detectors from Wavetronix. The data from these is available in various formats, however the most useful is often the “raw data flat files” in text csv format. This is the lowest level of data available per device.
For each working detector, data is available as follows:
  • Data is per poll cycle. This is configurable per detector. Most detectors are set to either 20 or 30 seconds.
  • Speed is available per lane. It is the average speed per lane during the poll cycle based on that point on the roadway.
  • Volume is available per lane. It is the actual count per lane during the poll cycle of vehicles crossing the detector.
  • Occupancy is available per lane. It is the average occupancy per lane during the poll cycle at the detector.
  • “BIN” data is also available. This type of data is designed to track things such as trucks (length of vehicle), but Lonestar does not use this element at this time.
This raw data is typically consolidated by TRF Division staff or contractors and is placed into a csv file structure on Box.com (TxDOT’s official file transfer method) to make it available to researchers, partners, etc., as well as internal TxDOT staff as needed. Please note that many of the devices listed in the spreadsheet are not operational.
The detector locations can be mapped using GIS, and the raw data from the detectors can be exported to an Excel spreadsheet and the 15-minute speeds and volumes can be derived.
The Detector Spreadsheet has a data field named Operational_Status_Name. A legend for values in this field is shown here:
  • Active
= OK to be considered for usage. Data is available in the csv files.
  • Error
= OK to be considered for usage. Data is available in the csv files.
  • Failed
    = Currently not operational.
  • Out of Service
    = Currently not operational.
