5.3 Rural Town, Suburban, Urban and Urban Core Design Element Characteristics
The design of local roads in the rural town context are similar to the design of local roads in the suburban, urban and urban core contexts. Local roads generally have lower traffic volumes than collectors and arterials and place emphasis on serving adjacent developments. A flexible and balanced approach to accommodate all modes of transportation should be applied.
Design features of local roads in urban areas are constrained by two major design controls:
- Type and extent of urban development that often limits the available ROW; and
- Zoning or regulatory restrictions.
The major design controls for local roads are intended to provide efficient operations.
The designer should be aware of local ordinances and resolutions that affect certain design features.
