21.3 Texas Trunk System (TRUNK)

The Texas Trunk System (TRUNK) was established in 1990 by the Texas Transportation Commission to construct a network of four- lane divided rural highways. The original system was 10,050 miles including 3, 233 miles of Interstate Highway System. Another 475 miles were added in 2001. TRUNK represents 13% of state highway systems.
The purpose of this initiative was to:
  • Improve rural mobility;
  • Connect major activity centers;
  • Provide access to ports of entry into Texas; and
  • Connect with principal highways from adjacent states.
