FM 149 Montgomery County

In November 2014, the FM 149 construction project was selected as part of the Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). HSIP is designed to reduce the number and severity of accidents. Objectives are accomplished through a variety of highway safety projects.

Purpose and need

The FM 149 construction project spans from FM 1791 to FM 1097 West in Montgomery County and includes:

  • Repairs
  • Resurfacing
  • Adding five-foot shoulders

This project does not require additional right of way (ROW) or displacements. All work is within the existing 80-foot ROW. Tree removal is expected within the existing ROW.

The 13-month-long construction contract was awarded to Smith & Company at a cost of $10.2 million and is estimated to begin early 2016; however, timing is subject to change.

Benefits

Improved safety is the primary benefit. In the last three years alone, there have been 68 crashes within the project area. Adding shoulders is expected to add more vehicle room given the curvature of the roadway as well as provide additional safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
