TxDOT's Beaumont District has approved removing seven highway crossovers spanning 20 miles on SH 73 within Jefferson County, from SH 124 east to 0.627 miles south of Portland Street.

Anticipated Benefits

The crossover locations were selected based on crash data, spacing of existing crossovers to provide emergency response and balancing mobility and private access. This project was also selected as a Highway Safety Improvement Project (more information can be found here). In removing these crossovers, it will serve to reduce crashes as well as better align with current design standards. One fatal crash, six incapacitating crashes and 11 suspected injuries were reported from 2018 to 2020.

Planned Improvements

Project improvements include:

  • Removing seven highway crossovers spanning 20 miles on SH 73
  • Removing crossover pavement markings and signage
  • Existing ditch/median will remain

Cable barriers will be considered for the crossover removal locations in the future. During the construction process - lane closures will take place at specific locations as the crossovers are removed, but access will always be maintained. No right of way or land acquisitions are needed for this project.

Estimated Timeline and Cost

  • Environmental clearance obtained: May 2022
  • Construction start: Fall 2022
  • Construction completion: Two-month duration
  • Construction cost: $96,000

Timeline is subject to change.

At the time of construction, this should be the only project currently being constructed along this stretch of SH 73. The limits of this project will be immediately adjacent to the SH 73 grade separation project at SH 124.

TxDOT does understand construction is frustrating and can be an inconvenience at times to drivers; however, the department must keep up with the growing demands from increased population as well as keep the state highway system as safe as possible by continuing to make improvements to roadways and bridges. Many factors go into timing road construction projects. This includes engineering design, working with affected property owners, coordinating with local agencies, bidding process and scheduling. Add to this - weather and other unforeseen construction factors that cannot always be anticipated. We will continue to keep you informed as much as possible throughout the process.
