HOUSTON – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is continuing inspection of the damaged San Jacinto Bridge after it was stuck by multiple barges on Friday. TxDOT is urging drivers to avoid the area if possible and to follow official detour routes:
TxDOT inspections to determine and assess the extent of the damage are on-going. Crews are scanning the underwater portion of the bridge with sonar technology to map out its current state. Once it is deemed safe to do so, divers will inspect the underwater portions of the bridge as well. TxDOT traffic engineers and bridge team are exploring options to restore traffic to the area. Those options can only be implemented if the final inspection can confirm the safety of the potential routes.
Road closure information will be posted at Houstontranstar.org and DriveTexas.org. For more information, contact Emily.Black@txdot.gov, (713) 802-5022 or Danny.Perez@txdot.gov, (713)802-5077. Follow us on Twitter @TxDOTHouston.
