Starting Tuesday, May 15, at 6 a.m., the Diana underpass on Northeast El Paso is scheduled to close for three months. In preparation, the eastbound frontage road will be closed Monday, May 14, from 9 p.m. - 5 a.m. During the overnight closure, crews will be striping. Over the three-month closure, construction crews will be widening the bridge over that intersection.
Drivers can use the gateways and turnarounds at Transmountain and Hondo Pass for better access.
The work is part of the TxDOT US 54 Widening and Illumination project, which began in November 2017 and is expected to be complete by March 2019. The $35 million dollar project stretches from Hondo Pass to Loop 375/Transmountain.
Once complete, each side of US 54 in those limits will have an added lane, high mast illumination, and turnarounds at Hondo Pass Avenue, Diana Drive, and at Loop 375 Transmountain. To improve safety in the area, the project will also reverse the existing on/off ramps in order to allow for traffic to merge on the access roads instead of the mainlanes. Pedestrians and residents will also enjoy a 2-mile shared use path that will be constructed northbound from Hondo Pass to Transmountain.
