A section of US 271 south of Gilmer will receive a new riding surface this year according to plans approved in May by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
“We will be resurfacing a 7.1-mile section of the highway from State Highway 155 south to Farm-to-Market Road 726” said Bill Compton, area engineer for TxDOT in Mount Pleasant. “We will be removing some of the old pavement and then repaving the entire roadway.”
Madden Contracting Company of Minden, La., was awarded the contract for the construction project with a bid of $5.0 million.
Work on the project should begin in August and take about nine months to complete, Compton said.
