To help facilitate a ramp improvement project, the Texas Department of Transportation will close the Georgia Street exit from Interstate 40 westbound for approximately two months. Starting Monday, June 4, drivers who typically exit Georgia Street from I-40 westbound will need to exit at Crockett Street and continue on to Georgia Street. The right lane of I-40 westbound will also be closed from the Crockett Street overpass to just past the Georgia Street overpass, to maintain a safe work zone.
“To help with the flow of traffic exiting I-40 westbound at Crockett Street, motorists need to be especially aware that frontage road traffic will not stop until it reaches Georgia Street,” says Assistant Amarillo Area Engineer Bernardo Ferrel. “Traffic traveling north and south on Crockett Street will have to stop before crossing or turning onto the westbound frontage road.”
Ferrel adds that message boards are already in place to alert area motorists of these changes and extra signage will accompany the new stop signs, as well.
Drivers are reminded to stay alert, follow all traffic signs, and adjust speed when traveling through a work zone.
