Purpose: The fourth in a series of four open houses to focus on historic metal truss bridges. Join TxDOT staff, representatives from the Historic Bridge Foundation and the Texas Historical Commission to discuss options for managing historic metal truss bridges.

Share your story! Bring your family photographs, newspaper articles or other items related to Texas' metal truss bridges to our open house. We will scan your items for archiving into the history collections of a local library and the Texas Historical Commission.

Description: Challenges for historic bridges include new demands driven by evolving economic development needs, changing population in rural areas and demands on public funding. TxDOT strives to involve many points of view in efforts to assess and plan for a historic bridge’s potential future.

Sometimes a bridge can be successfully rehabbed for ongoing vehicular service, such as the recent Piano Bridge project completed in partnership with Fayette County. Sometimes a bridge can be successfully adapted for a new use, such as San Antonio’s Hays Street bridge adaption as a hike-and-bike facility.

The open house will continue the conversation with the public regarding bridge management planning efforts to develop and demonstrate effective strategies to retain historic bridges as viable assets open to vehicular traffic or repurposed for new uses.

Please take our three-question survey about public input.
