Mark Marek, P.E., serves as director of Engineering Operations.
Under the direction of the deputy executive director, Marek oversees and coordinates the department’s engineering operations.
Marek joined the TxDOT family in 1981 as an engineering assistant in the Highway Design Division. He worked for the Austin District in construction before returning to the Highway Design Division in 1985. In 1988, he was named engineer of Geometric Design and later served as director of Roadway Design from 1998 until his appointment as the Design Division’s deputy director in September 2002. He was named director of the Design Division in 2004 and became director of Engineering Operations on May 1, 2014.
Marek is a member of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Subcommittee on Design. He was also a member of AASHTO Technical Committee on Geometric Design and coauthored the 1990, 1994 and 2001 editions of the AASHTO Green Book. He served as chair of this AASHTO Technical Committee when it produced the 2011 edition of the AASHTO Green Book. In 1992, he received the Gibb Gilchrist Award from the Texas Transportation Institute in recognition of outstanding service in highway engineering. In 2002, he received the AASHTO Subcommittee on Design Award for contributions to the development of national highway design policies and procedures.
Marek earned his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas in 1981 and his master’s degree in Business Administration from Southwest Texas State University in 1986. He received his license as a professional engineer in 1985. He and his wife, Sheryl, have been married for 22 years.
