Silt fences, sometimes called “filter fences,” are temporary sediment control devices used on construction sites due to activities that disturb the soil. A silt fence is a water-quality protection device to prevent sediment in the stormwater runoff from entering nearby streams, rivers, lakes and seas. Proper installation, proper placement and routine maintenance are required for silt fences to be effective in controlling sediment.
