Gore is a boundary intended to help organize and protect traffic when vehicles enter and exit roadways. In the case of an exit ramp, the gore area helps ensure safety by separating the exit ramp from the through lanes on the highway and by informing drivers when they can safely merge on or off the exit ramp. In the case of an entrance ramp, the gore area separates the entrance ramp from the lanes of the highway and indicates to the driver when it is safe or legal to merge and join the other traffic.
