Cable-stay bridges eliminate many piers by supporting the superstructure at regular intervals by stay cables, which provide relatively inflexible support along the span. A conventional girder bridge has multiple pier supports. A suspension bridge supports its superstructure by suspenders provided at regular intervals, which are connected to main cables.
