Objectives, PI&E, Performance Measures and Activities

Objectives should briefly indicate the specific purpose of the project and will indicate to the reviewer what you plan to achieve with the proposal if a grant is awarded. Performance measures and targets provide guidance to determine efficiency and effectiveness of the project, serving as measures of project progress. Each performance measure should be designed as an evaluative mechanism for measuring the project’s level of success. Performance targets determine the degree of progress toward achievement of established performance measures and the effect on identified problems. Performance targets are expressed quantitatively (numbers of things) and are monitored and reported throughout the grant or contract period.

Projects may not extend beyond September 30 of the last fiscal year for which it is proposed. They must follow the SMART principle; that is, they must be Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic and Time-framed.

Note: If a Public Information & Educational (PI&E) activity is part of the project being proposed, a PI&E Objective Statement is required.

Note: It is important that you do not restate the entire objective statement when you enter the Performance Measure of your objective. Do not include the action verb or the target numbers; these have already been entered. Just provide the Measure. Use the examples shown here when completing your Objective Statements.
