Texas Highways Reveals More Readers’ Choice Top 40 Texas Destinations

Throughout 2014, official travel magazine of Texas shares readers’ favorite places to visit

AUSTIN — In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Texas Highways magazine announced another round of the Texas Top 40 favorite destinations as chosen by its readers.

The announcement places Galveston at No. 15, Palestine at No. 14 and Corpus Christi at No. 13.

The July issue of Texas Highways invites readers to tour Texas’ top vistas. Through stunning photography, readers and explorers will learn that getting to the view is half the fun as they travel on foot, by tram, in an elevator and even on a Ferris wheel to some of the state’s most picturesque points.

Also as part of this issue, readers get a glimpse of some cool summer getaways, such as Grapevine where Gen. Sam Houston and members of 10 American Indian nations negotiated a peace treaty in 1843. Since then, Grapevine has become a hub for family vacations, especially during SummerBlast activities from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Visitors will discover great shopping, museums, restaurants and even weekly fireworks over Lake Grapevine.

Cheese lovers will savor “The Texas Cheese Tour” story. Gone are the days when shoppers had to look for cheeses made in northern states or even abroad. Plenty of artisanal cheese makers call Texas home, and writer June Naylor delivers a robust selection.

Also in the issue, the Texas Hat Museum at Ben’s Western Wear in Cotulla; treasure-hunting at The Owl in Elgin; and floating the San Marcos River with “The Daytripper” host, Chet Garner.

Subscribers began receiving the new issue of Texas Highways on June 10; the digital edition was released on June 13. Hard copy editions are available today at hundreds of newsstands statewide, including H-E-B, Target, Walmart, Randall’s and Barnes & Noble.
