Whenever a vehicle is sold in Texas, state law requires the vehicle
be titled in the buyer’s name within 20 working days. Unfortunately, not all
Texans comply with this requirement. As a result, thousands of vehicles remain
titled in the name of the previous owner.
How does this affect me?
When you sell a vehicle, the title stays in your name until the buyer
transfers the vehicle into his/her name. This means you could receive parking
tickets, toll violations or possibly have your property seized if the vehicle is
used to commit a crime. Even if you sold the vehicle years ago, you are still
shown as the owner in state records.
What can I do?
