These documents contain text of correspondence sent by
TxDOT to the county tax assessor-collectors, statutory agents who provide
vehicle registration and titling services for citizens in Texas. This
information is provided to apprise the general public of issues affecting the
state’s vehicle titling and registration process.
PURPOSE
To notify counties that towing companies will start presenting
different cab cards when applying for Tow Truck license plates.
DETAILS
Effective January 1, 2008, House Bill 2094, transferred the regulation
of towing companies and tow trucks from TxDOT Motor Carrier Division to the
Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Starting February 4, 2008,
towing companies will receive new tow truck cab cards from TDLR rather than
TxDOT. The changes to the cab cards are the:
- state seal of Texas on top instead of the TxDOT logo,
- agency name and phone number change at the bottom of the form,
- expiration will change from two years to one year.
There will be a period of time that either cab card will be valid. TxDOT cab
cards will be phased out as towing companies renew their credentials with TDLR.
Examples of both TDLR and TxDOT cab cards are attached.
COUNTY ACTION
When Tow Truck license plates are requested, counties should
inspect the cab card before issuing the plates to ensure the cab card is a valid
and current TDLR or TxDOT document and the vehicle is listed.
