We receive many requests for personal information, such as a person's name
and address, based on vehicle license plate numbers. State and federal
laws restrict the release of such information.
Some of the requests we receive from citizens do not qualify for the
release of personal information. These requests include:
- contact a driver who hit my car and drove away,
- report a reckless driver,
- contact the owner of an abandoned vehicle,
- locate a friend or relative, or
- locate a parent owing child support (we release this information to the
child support enforcement division of the Office of the Attorney General but not
to individual citizens).
We are not authorized to release personal information for any of these
reasons. We are, however, required by law to disclose personal information only
if:
- you have written consent from the person who is the subject of your
request, or
- you certify the information will be used for a lawful, legitimate
purpose.
To request personal information, you must complete a
request form [pdf, 2 pages, 142kb] and certify the information will be used
for a lawful, permitted purpose.
