You may have received a notice from your auto insurance company that your policy
does not match a vehicle record in TxDOT’s database. If your insurance policy is
for a vehicle registered in Texas and there is an error, we must fix it to help
protect you against fraud and registration problems.
There may be valid reasons why your vehicle information is not in our
database (such as the vehicle was sold, is located out of state or is not in
use). In that case, your insurance company needs to know.
Steps to Take
If you received a notice, it is most likely that your vehicle identification
number (VIN) is incorrect on either your insurance policy or vehicle title. Help us
resolve this error by completing the following steps:
- Step 1: Compare the VIN on your insurance policy to the one physically
located on your vehicle (usually on
the driver's side dashboard).
- Step 2: Complete the appropriate action:
- If your insurance policy shows the wrong VIN, contact your insurance agent to
correct the problem.
- If your insurance policy shows the correct VIN, then the VIN or your address may be wrong in
our database. Check for discrepancies on your title, if you have it, and
notify us immediately. You or your lienholder will have to mail us the
title for correction. Complete a
Statement of Physical Inspection (Form VTR-270) and
mail it to us (our address is on the form), along with your original
title and a copy of the insurance company notice you received.
We will correct title VIN errors for free, but you must apply within 30 days
from the date on your insurance company’s notice. After the 30-day waiver
period, you will need to contact your local county tax office
to correct your title and pay the applicable processing fee ($28 or $33).
- Step 3: If you are unable to compare the VIN on your policy to the one
physically located on your vehicle (because it was sold, is out of state, etc.), or if your
vehicle is not in use, complete a
Statement of Vehicle Use, and mail it to your insurance company.
- Step 4: Have you moved? Are you unsure whether the state has your
correct address? If you're not sure, please submit a free
change of address.
