 Apportioned
registration, also known as the International Registration Plan (IRP), is a
program for licensing commercial vehicles engaged in interstate trucking.
Apportioned registration lets you obtain registration credentials in one
jurisdiction, giving you the freedom of interstate travel without having to
purchase trip permits.
If
your commercial vehicle is engaged in interstate operation, you may qualify for
apportioned registration. To learn if you qualify,

(VTR) regional offices or send us an

Registration Process
If you qualify for apportioned registration, you can obtain your credentials by:
- completing and submitting the appropriate
registration forms, or
- using our new online registration system, called
TxIRP.
TxIRP allows
you to process your apportioned registration application online instead of
mailing in your application or waiting in line at the regional office. For more

NOTE: Trailers pulled by apportioned power units
require token trailer license plates that can be obtained from your
county tax office.
Five-Year Token Trailer Registration
Trucks or truck-tractors greater than one ton, with
apportioned and combination registration and with a semi-trailer gross weight of
6,000 pounds or more, may apply for five-year token trailer license plates.
Legislation passed in 2007 eliminated the 50-trailer minimum eligibility
requirement to register trailers for five consecutive years. All owners of token
trailers now have the option to register/renew trailers for one year, five years
or a portion of the years remaining in the five-year period.
For example, the current five-year period for five-year
token trailers expires March 2010. If an owner of a token trailer applies for
token trailer registration in September 2007, one of the following types of
token trailer registration may be purchased:

One-year registration through the county tax
assessor-collector’s office (no change in procedure); or
-
Three years of registration through the VTR
regional office. The owner will
pay three years of registration fees and applicable local fees, and is
issued a five-year token trailer plate with March 2010 expiration; or

Beginning April 2010, five years of registration may be
purchased with an expiration of March 2015.
