Navasota Subdivision

Within the study area, the Navasota Subdivision, which predominantly follows the general direction of FM 2920 from Spring to Tomball, was constructed in the early 1900’s by the International and Great Northern Railroad.

Length

The Navasota Subdivision is approximately 100 miles long, with terminus points at Spring Junction and Valley Junction near Bryan/College Station.

Ownership

The track is owned and operated by Union Pacific with approximately 27 miles of this line segment contained within the study area.

Rail Traffic

Predominantly a single-track railroad with limited passing sidings, the Subdivision normally carries rail traffic inbound toward Houston, and averages 15 – 20 trains daily.

Characteristics

Currently vehicular traffic may be delayed along the Navasota Subdivision due to the frequency of trains. The pending southern expansion of residential areas such as The Woodlands will increase the overall vehicular travel on effected roadways such as Kuykendahl.

Five grade crossings have been analyzed for closure and/or separation, which would reduce risk of hazards associated with the roadway/pedestrian/rail interface.

The following table displays the estimated costs of identified improvements for the Navasota Subdivision:

Identified Improvements
Class Estimated Cost Estimated Public Benefit
Class 3 Improvements (Grade Separations) $34,100,000 $12,930,000
Class 3 Improvements (Crossing Closures) $50,000 $230,000
Class 4 Improvements (Rail Capacity Additions) $79,000,000 NA
Total Identified Improvements $113,150,000 $13,160,000
