History
Constructed in the mid 1850’s by the Galveston
Houston and Henderson Railroad Company, the rail line is currently owned and
operated by the Union Pacific Railroad.
Geographic Limits
The Galveston Subdivision begins at South GH&H Junction,
located in south Houston just east and north of US Hwy 59 and IH 45 respectively
and essentially parallels IH 45 to Galveston. The UP Galveston Subdivision and
the BNSF Galveston Subdivision jointly operate over a single track bridge
spanning the Galveston Causeway accessing Galveston Island.
Length
The entire 47 miles of the UP Galveston Subdivision are contained within the
study area.
Rail Traffic
Predominantly a
single track line with limited passing sidings, the rail line is used in a
bidirectional manner and averages between 5 – 10 trains daily. Along the rail
line there are numerous industrial tracks to service the customer base, in
particular an interchange with the Texas City Terminal Railway Company in Texas
City.
