Description
This four-lane bridge carries commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles and
pedestrians. It is 4,024 feet long, with sidewalks on both sides.
The crossing is also known locally as Los Tomates
Bridge, Expressway 77 Bridge, Brownsville Expressway Bridge and Puente Internacional Ignacio Zaragoza.
History
The bridge began operating on April 30, 1999, and began processing all
northbound commercial vehicles for the Brownsville area on May 1. On July
12 of that year, the
bridge began processing southbound commercial vehicles. An agreement was
made later that year between the U.S. State Department and the Mexican Secretaria de Relaciones
Exteriores for all southbound commercial vehicles in the
area to be directed to this bridge.
Oversize/overweight vehicles with
permits
can travel on US 77/US 83 and State Highway (SH) 48/SH 4 between this bridge and
the Port of Brownsville.
More information is available from the
Cameron County Web site.

on upcoming projects within the bridge study area.
