Types of Texas Transit Providers

  • Metropolitan Transit Authorities
    Metropolitan Transit Authorities (MTAs) provide public transportation in Texas' seven largest urban areas, with populations of 200,000 or more:
  • Other Transit Agencies Serving Populations Greater Than 200,000
  • Urban Transit Systems
    Urban (or urbanized/municipal) transit systems serve populations between 50,000 and 200,000.
  • Rural Transit Systems
    Rural (or non-urbanized) transit systems serve populations less than 50,000.
  • Elderly Individuals and Individuals with Disabilities Transit Systems
    Private nonprofit and public for-profit organizations offer public transportation for the elderly and disabled throughout the state.
