All urban areas in Texas have ICB service, and many points
are served in more remote areas. According to a recent study, there are
approximately 424 stops in Texas. "Intercity service" is regularly scheduled bus
service for the general public operating with limited stops over fixed routes
connecting two or more urban areas not in close proximity, which has the
capacity for transporting baggage carried by passengers, and which makes
meaningful connections with other scheduled ICB service to more
distant points. Greyhound Lines, Inc. and Trailways Transportation System are
commonly known motorcoach companies providing ICB service.
Funding for ICB service comes from a 15% set aside of the rural
(5311) program. The ICB program is designed is to strengthen the connection
between non-urbanized areas and the larger regional or national system of
ICB service; to support services to meet the intercity travel needs of
residents in non-urbanized areas; and to support the infrastructure of the
ICB network through planning and marketing assistance and capital
investment in facilities and vehicles.
